How early can you take a blood test to detect pregnancy? Any one who works for an OB/GYN that knows for a fact?

technically a blood test should pick it up six to seven days after conception...when implantation occurs.... obgyn's prefer to wait to do them at day ten... for more accuracy and higher levels.. the hormone levels double every other day so at day ten on they can give a more accurate estimated due date.... although.. it will still only be an estimate.... :) never did ask why day ten in particular... sorry....

I am a medical lab tech...I actually DO both the blood and urine test for pregnancy. Both tests are looking for levels of the hormone Beta HCG, or human gonadotropic hormone.
The urine test detects only IF the hormone is there or not, and is less sensitive than the blood test.
The blood test will detect very small levels of Beta HCG, usually within a day or two of implantation.

Generally, the urine test is the one that is done if you are just wanting to know if you are pregnant. The blood test is generally done for fertility or health issues, such as a possible tubal pregnancy.

Hope this helps.

A blood test can tell almost immediately after implantation. There are two different types of blood tests one tests the amount of HCG in your blood kind of like a urine test if it doesn't reach a certain level it will come back negative. But the other blood test you go and have blood drawn they check your beta and HCG levels and then ask you to come back a week later to see if the levels have gone up. But most doctors will not perform these blood tests until you are a week late. or this is a potential problem. Just wait it out and if you miss your period take a test, if it comes back negative and you still haven't started then I would suggest going to your doctor, there they will perform a blood test or even a trans vaginal ultrasound. Best of luck to you
