First pre-med...bachelors in biology, zoology, psychology, chemistry, etc (just about anything really), then four years of medical school and then comes your residency. I'm a residency coordinator for ortho surgery and our residency is 5 years. following your residency if you wish to get a fellowship in a subspecialty that would be another year at least. This may vary by country, but typical for the U.S. - and sometimes if a person does not match to a residency program right away they may do a transitional year where they are doing research or whatever.

Call your local hospital and ask if you can actually speak to a surgeon. Some hospitals will even let you do some "shadowing" where you observe what's going on.

Get good grades...I mean GOOD grades...do a lot of volunteer work outside of school...get into medical school...get GOOD grades again...do your residency at a local hospital...maybe one that specializes in the type of surgery you would like to do...be a kind, compassionate invidual who truly cares, wants to make a difference, and really help his fellow man.....
