Software engineering is a pretty broad term. Software engineers can do a variety of things; some actually write the software code using C, C++, asp, .net, VB, Java, or any of the other programming languages--- there's lots and lots of languages out there. Other software engineers support the code once it's written, which may mean working in a test lab to try to "break" the software and find all the bugs before the customers get the product, or working directly with the customers to solve the problems they have. It's a really broad job title and it can mean a very different thing depending on where you work.

I'd recommend deciding what about computers you really want to work with. If you like calculus, you won't have any problem learning one or more of the coding languages; there's not much in common so you won't actually USE your calculus skills, but just being fond of such a complicated thing shows you can learn complex things and think in the abstract. You can apply your learning power to anything.

If you are interested in creating the programs that run on the computers, look into coding classes, or get some used computer books on eBay and try teaching yourself the basics of some of the more popular languages. Most software developers have one language they love to work in and one they hate to work in, so finding a cheap way to expose yourself to lots of different languages is a good first step.

If you prefer the day-to-day operations, and like customer service, you might look into networking instead.

So I guess the first thing to do is figure out exactly what about computers you like, and go from there!

I'm in the software engineering major at Champlain College, and a short answer is that you will be working with computers at the very basic level. Yes, lots of programming is involved. You will learn C++, Java, aswell as many other languages. having a background in html will help a little, but being math oriented is key. Overall im glad i decided to pursue this field, becuase you can solve people's problems, and make alot of money doing it. I hope this helped.
