Ask her which she would like. Home cooked or takeaway. Maybe you could cook the meal together.
I definitely think saying in, eating together followed by whatever may happen would be much better than the pressure of going out.

DON'T GET A TAKE AWAY!!! It's Valentine Day...so make it a bit different to any other night of the week. I haven't looked at the other answers yet, but I bet they'll all agree. Well, some blokes might not ha!
If you cook a meal, the setting is just as important...candles, flowers on the table, low lights, and don't be spending the evening cooking while she is sat alone at the table. Plan the meal carefully so it's all ready to serve.
Perhaps a little heart shaped chocolate in a small box (Thorntons usually do these) would be nice to put at her place setting.
Have a lovely evening!

If you know how to cook, cook her a nice candlelight dinner. Everyone goes out to dinner on Valentine's and the places are crowded, so if you want some quiet time for dinner, I would cook a meal, if you know how to cook, or get a nice take home meal. If you go with the take meal, make sure it's a nice dinner, not Boston Market or something like that. As a woman, my first choice would be to have my guy cook for me. It's sweet and does have more meaning than going out. You say that a take away meal seems lazy, but if you are working full time and don't really have the time to cook a full meal, there's nothing lazy about stopping by a nice restaurant and taking a complete meal home. Just remember to get something traditional for dessert, like strawberries dipped in chocolate or a piece of chocolate cake with cut strawberries on top and drizzled with chocolate or fudge. And remember, set the mood for romance, soft lighting, soft music and after your nice quiet dinner, if you or she feels like going out, you can always go see a movie or take a nice walk or go dancing...there are no set standards of what you should do for valentine's day, everyone enjoys different things. Oh, if you get her a gift, that's great, but don't forget the roses.....even if it's just 1 rose to accompany her gift, you can't forget the roses. ; )
I hope you have a wonderful Valentine's day with your girl.

You could always make her a lovely meal ,decorate abit have some balloons and bunch of flowers for her set the table up lovely with some candles, few drinks ,good film or music on or after you have the meal head out somewhere nice.
Personally the restaurants where I am seem to do these silly menu's with a choice of three course's and the normal menu is not on ,alot of the menu's that are done i don't even fancy whats on the menu and you are in the middle of all these other gushing couples and weird men popping out rings can put you off your food :)

Going out or cooking would be nice. If you do decide to cook for her...you better do the dishes!! If you don't feel like cooking or going out, take out would work. Something to make it more meaningful would be getting her favorite foods from her favorite restaurants. It shows that you put a lot of thought into the meal and it would be her favorite meal, EVER!!

Cooking a meal, alot of guys seem that takeing thier girlfriend's to a fancy restrunt seems over rated, but a meal , comes from the heart, maybe have a red table cloth, candles, romance music, stuff like that , and at the end have a sweet derrserts.

If you're a good cook, then cook for her. If you're not so good I'd normally say take her out, but Valentines Day, you'll be stuck with special menus in most places, poor service, cos the staff would rather be with their bf/gf! So the take away could work, but look for something different......Japanese maybe, Greek, not the pizza or sweet and sour sort of take away you can get anytime.

ignore ruby...what a doofus! cooking a meal is a really nice romantic gesture, but it entails a lot of effort and stressing out in the kitchen if your unsure of what your cooking and not good in the kitchen. if your worried about cooking a meal, take her to a nice restaurant, it will enable you both to have a relaxing evening and have a nice conversation over a candle lit meal.

Its lovely taking her out for a meal, but it would be more romantic for her and she will think a lot of u for the trouble u have gone through and the thought that u put into it. Dont forget the red rose on the table.

A home cooked meal by my boyfriend is without a doubt the favourite. I really grudge the inflated prices at restaurants and a take away is definitely lacking in thought! Mind you my boyfriend's a chef :-)
