to start him out. We just got married, and he is always borrowing other peoples' tools to fix something. I want to get this for him for Valentine's Day. I know - sooo unromantic. Any handymen out there who know what needs to be in the toolbox? I want to spend about $200. Thanks!

Get him a gift card for Sears, unromantic too maybe. Unless you give it to him..............naked. =) it's better to let the person who is going to be using the tools pick them out unless you know specifically what they want.

If you look in stores like Sears, Lowe's, or Home Depot they sell assortments of tools in boxes for home use. The price for the whole collection in a nice box is about 25% of the cost of an equivalent bunch of items purchased separately. They have carefully chosen the items to be generally useful. Beyond that you can always buy added goodies on other occasions (and they will fit in the box too).

You need at least a claw hammer and a mallet, a set of the sizes of slotted and phillips screwdrivers, an adjustable wrench, a pipe wrench some punches, several pliers (cutting, slip joint, and locking), as well as a small assortment of combo wrenches and of socket wrenches and their handles. This bare minimum will get him started for general repairs but the assortments always throw in a lot more items so that they can claim a large count of tools in the collection.

It would also be handy to get him a bunch of those blister packs of common sizes of nuts, bolts, screws, and nails without which nothing will go together. If you can get a large empty heart- shaped candy box you could throw in those small packs so he will be ready for the next set of chores.

BTW the beauty of getting hand tools from Sears is if you get the Craftsman brand they have a lifetime warranty. He can come back with his bent screwdrivers and his rusted wrenches years later and they will give him brand new ones in exchange, no matter how abused the old ones were and no matter how often he brings them in.

First you need to figure out what type of handy man work he will be doing, Plumbing, electrical, or mechanical. If he will be doing a little of every thing, he will need a hammer, a set of screw drivers, needle nosed pliers, standard pliers, Channel-locks, vise-grips, metric & SAE allen wrench sets, Diagonal cutter(wire cutter), set of Box/open-end wrenches, set of socket wrenches, wire stripper, crescent wrench, seat wrench (for dripping faucets).

By the way, tools that you buy from sears are not worth the weight of the metal from which they are made. I have some of my grandfather's old craftsman tools that have seen more than 50 years of work, and they are still in superb condition. But, I also have five year old craftsman tools that are completely worn out because the quality has plummeted so severely. Ridgid (home depot store brand) and Kobalt (lowe's store brand) are both far superior to Craftman. Kobalt is at the same level of quality that craftsman was at 20 years ago. It's not as great as Snap-on, but it is more than sufficient for an average home-owner.

RE: low quality tools
If you have to go to sears everytime you use an allen wrench because it stripped out and you need to replace it, in the long run the amount of money that you spend on gas far outweighs the cost of a tool that will last.

Id suggest Walmart....First pick a plastic box with wheels on it for the tools.
I would suggest getting a complete set of screwdrivers, a claw hammer, combination wrenches in standard and metric. Way under 200 bucks, and a good start. Get the Stanley brand if you go to walmart, or you can get decent craftsman tools at sears

many places like sears and home depot have good tool offers here and there... although all those tools suck in my opinion...

craftsmen has lifetime warranty on their tools so if they break he can take them in and they give him a new one... but i would recommend you get him a gift certificate to sears and let him pick out the tools he needs...

if he likes high quality tools then you should look into "snap-on" brand tools its a little more expensive but they claim to be the best American tool company. the chrome finish never flakes off, which seems to be the problem with craftsmen tools

Go to Home Depot. They will be able to put a good selection of tools together, based on your description of what your husband enjoys most. Trust them.

I would go to Sears and pick out an assortment. The have a section of really cheap tools now also. these do not have warrantees, but if you only use your allen wrench once a year, you don't need a good one.

it depends on what he is doing with the tools. there are many different collections for different tasks. i suggest you just get him a gift card and let him pick out what he wants. thats what men like to do !
