Yes you can. Make sure you contact the bank before you go. This way they won't freeze your card. Some banks require you to activated the card for transaction outside of your home county.
If you debit card has a MasterCard, Maestro or visa symbol it can be used at merchants that take those card. If you card has cirrus, visa plus or a Maestro symbol it can be used at some atms. Use atms that do not eat your card in case they don't work.
If your debit card has a MasterCard or Visa symbol and you are using an atm. Choose primary credit instead of current/checking account.
There will be fees for each transaction you make.

Yes, you can. Anywhere in Africa, it will work. As long as you have a magnetic strip that's not scratched. We haven't gotten to chip and pin yet.
Don't stress about identity theft, use the same precautions you take using your card as you would in any other country. They are just worrying you for no reason.

You possible could , but I would check on identity theft over there , there are a few African countries that have a high percentage of this Nigeria being one.

chech this with your local bank branch see if they have ageement with that country and make sure exactly which city. but it hard to see it is safe to use it.
