I've heard 1/64th notes played, and probably even faster. But what is the fastest an arpeggio (I mean individual chord notes) without surpassing the limits of the human ear. (I've heard that there is some sort of limit to how fast the ear can register sounds.)

The highest frequency a human hears is typically 20kHz. or 20,000 cycles per second. Obviously no one can pluck a string or hit a key that fast (even if you could it would be a blur). The human ear should have no problems distinquishing 4 or even 8 notes per second and thats pretty fast. Being a drummer I've played 1/128 notes but not at a fast BPM. I can't imagine counting faster than that.
