we're all becoming more and more addicted to the media and less and less able to think for ourselves... if you watch in an observationalist perspect, you can summarize the media as "fear and consume".
sadly, it appears that materialism is becoming what its about.

You sound too young to be having a mid-life turn-around, but those silhouettes all look young. Middle age, or hopefully sooner, we have a death in the family or just an Ephipany. We know that we spend the first half of life accumulating and the last half getting rid of it before we go!! Love is still # 1 and always will be. How we treat others is the key. You can't abandon your family and go hug a tree for fulfillment is that's what you mean. That's whacked! And that's running AWAY from it!! Not getting IN TOUCH with the world. God made nature beautiful but He made his best work Man. God lives in the people you meet, good or bad, and you either treat Him well or you don't because you think they don't deserve it. God is in the details. And Love is the key AND the Prize!! @8-) Sorry for getting carried away a little!! Peace.

The indu belived that a soul lives many lives. The soul grow over each life span. In the first years of a soul it will want material things and things or habits that grant pleasure. As it grows older it will look for recognition power and status, and on the lasts times a soul comes to earth it will look to serve others as a mean of satisfaction. I guess todays world is mostly filed with young souls.
this theory also applies to age in humans, as people grow older their priorities change.
Materialism is not all there is in life, many more things can be found. Howerver, you should look for whatever makes you happy be it material or essence

Being one with the earth? maybe, i think its more about family. Sure we should take care of the earth and we can get joy from it but the only place you can actually give and receive love unconditionally is in the family. Of course in the culture the family is also valued below material things it seems, so a lot of people have really crappy families. It is what you make it.

Materialism is NOT the most important thing in our culture...only to the most shallow among us. Life is NOT really about materialism.
I'm actually SHOCKED by this question. I've seen very few materialistic adults. It does seem to be more prevalent among the teens and young adults, but USUALLY having children changes the shallow mindset to a more generous and loving one. usually.

no materialism is not what life is about. the Lord put us here to work, live and love through him so that when this life is over we can ultimately end up with him. the world is backwards thinking that we are here just for material gain.

We'll never know why we're living for and everybody's trying to find his own worth. The problem is that now our worth is mainly expressed by our possessions and not by ourselves anymore.
Anyway, love, friendship and helping others come to mind naturally after a while. Anything can happen, we're all united.

Consumption is the cornerstone of Capitalism. What do you expect? Corporations would love to talk to you 24/7 to remind you of the things you need! lol. Get rid of your tv and avoid mass media to the best of your ability.

I've always lived by the saying "You can't take it with you", that way I don't become materialistic. I don't think having all of those things makes one happy.
