open you Character Map utility (normally Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools), in the drop-down box, select the Wingdings font. You should see the tick at the bottom of the grid below the font name (you'll need to scroll down). Select it, click the copy button, then in the app/doc you want the tick to appear in, click where you want it to be and press .

Tic is the name for the single quote, to the right of the semicolon to the left of the Enter key

do you want to make a tick sign while working with text in MS-WORD? if it is while working with word..
Go to --> Insert Menu
-->click Symbol
--->select the required symbol tick or what ever
--->click on the insert button.
