The ugly creature that accompanies Frodo and consistantly aims to steal the ring. Is the creature computer generated, a puppet, or an animated device. Hopefully no human looks like that.

The character was CGI but based on the movements and facial expressions of actor Andy Serkis who also provided the voice.

Andy Serkis actually wore a white suit for the actual filming. He kind of looked like an odd mummy. Then they digitally removed him and put in Gollum. He wore the blue suit in the studio when they needed to record his movements. There are some fascinating documentaries about the process of bringing Gollum to life. Check out the bonus features on the Extended Edition DVDs, particularly The Two Towers.

Computer generated. The actor who does his voice just wore a blue suit thing during the filming so the other actors would know where the charactor would be. then computer generated over the top for the final result you see today

It was a person in a green costume who did all the moves. Then with a computer they went in to add the creature into the green costume. I saw it in the making of the movie. It was pretty cool.

Gollum was played by an actual human, but they did alot of computer stuff to get him to look that way. I read that the guy that portrayed him based his character on a 40 or 50 year old heroin addict.

As far as I know, he's computer generated, but based on the actions and motions of a live person, a British actor.

He is generated by tolkein's spirit. Peter Jackson had a team of spiritual mediums channeling his thoughts into images, that's how dedicated he was.

I think he is computer generated.

He was a human first, then the ring is what made him become that creature.

Gollum/Smeagol, I love him, he's so cute lol.
