Yes, absolutely. It is all ad revenue. Why do you think they give you the toolbar? They want you to use theirs not the competition's.
So that they get more "eyes" - an industry jargon for how many people have viewed it.
They both exist on my computer, no problem. They don't seem to conflict.

Yes you can have more than one search engine and they search individually and compete each other. But solutions from them do not compete if you search for the same thing;-) All the search engines provide the readymade toolbars. So you can keep both but youe IE will have more bars on the top which is really uncomfortable while working on internet.

Yes! Off course!
They compete in terms of revenue(s) generated!
The more complete and updated a search engine, the more visitors; and the more visitors, the more advertisements; and the more advertisements, the more INCOME!
Many advertisers advertise in sites that many users visit like Yahoo!, Google, etc.

It is useless to keep Yahoo (heheh ironic I say this in Yahoo Answers). Google is a far superior search engine. You just need Google, no need to slow down your computer.

They do compete on a business level but not as applications on your PC - one will not kill the others process explicitly. They both can run fine and I often see people with 3 or 4 of them installed. I avoid having any of them installed actually just because they take up too much window space.

search engines do compete, but they dont always find things, one may find a specific topic the other may over look. www.Dogpile.com uses the technology of several search engines at once. give it a shot.

Both *exist*; you need not keep or lose either. Google tends to search by content (innards) of web files, Yahoo! tends to search by title (uppards) of web files: both types of searches have their advantages
