The Colts had the first pick in the draft that year. They picked Manning instead of Leaf. The owner this past week stated that they were going with Manning the whole time, stating he was a better fit for what they wanted to do. I think Leaf's ego was so inflated by winning the Heisman, and he felt that he deserved the respect and attention. He also didn't have a mentor in SD like Rivers had. So some of the blame for his lackluster performance can be blamed on the management of the Chargers.

Apparently he could not throw well with accuracy or length. If he was "amazing" as a QB he would still be working in pro football, even being a SOB.
If you are a star player, they will let you do anything (see Ricky Williams, Barry Bonds, etc.). If you are awful, they cut you. Leaf was cut.

"Crying" Ryan Leaf was one of the biggest busts in NFL Draft history. He was too immature and lacked confidence in himself. He alienated his own team against him. Yes he had a great arm, but his problems were all in his head. It was mental. He lacked the mental toughness and focus to become a big time QB.

He didnt have the maturity or menal fortitude to handle the pressure and expectations that come along with being the # 2 draft pick overall. Mo' money mo' problems, i dont care how physically talented you are, you must be able to handle yourself mentally to be a success in the NFL

Leaf? Throw him in the mix with McGwire, Ware, Blackledge, Weinke, Torretta, Wuerffel, ...all supposed sure fire pro calibar qb who simply couldn't make the transistion from college stardom. Leaf and McGwire really good comparsion in my estimation as both big guys who's arm strength vastly overrated and who's college programs did little to prepare them for multi schemes of pros.

Even in his high school and college days, Leaf was well-known for having a mouth on him. By the time he reported to the Chargers, it became clear that his mouth and his ego were writing checks his talent couldn't cash.

He was Godawful. For him to be a 1st round pick was a sham. He should give back every cent to any team he was on.
