Again it depends on your budget.
I'm using a mid-range Acer 17 inch and like it a lot.....BUT my next computer will be a new INTEL Mac. I'll be able to run OS X and Windows on the same machine literally the best of two worlds. So for me at least the Mac is it.

Every laptop is made with certain criteria if you will. If your looking to play games you want something with good ram(memory) 256 or higher, and a good video card. If your looking for business based you want a laptop with a big hard drive 80GB or more. Good name brands are the same as computers. Hp/Compaq is top of the line, next would probably be Dell. Whatever you do don't get something called "bare-bones" through tigerdirect.com. I had so many problems with them.
you can try going to your average Compusa, best buy, or circut city. However my BF got me a Compaq this past xmas and I got it 45% off because it was marked down and hidden in the back of the store. So try actually shopping at the stores.

There are a lot of good Laptops. Money will dictate what you can buy. I have always looked at IBM being top of the line, but, they sold out to Lenovo (China) and I not know now.
Another Laptop I feel may be top of line is Asus. But, I have not owned one, but, use their Motherboards in a lot of Desktop Builds.
This is Newegg;
http://www.newegg.com/ProductSort/SubCategory.asp?SubCategory=32&name=Notebooks-Laptops
Now I not say buy here, but, learn here. On the page is Deals of the Day. On the left you can narrow your search by Brand, Price etc. Also, when you move to another page you can see before the computers a place to change how the Laptops are displayed; Low to High price, High to Low, Most popular etc.
Last is the Egg ratings. When you click the name discription of a computer it take you to that specific page where on the right you can read; Specifications and Reviews. The more Eggs the better the reviews and you can read comments of those reviews and see what and why people say what they do.
Also, do not rule out the MACs. They not on Newegg and you best go to the Mac web-site here;

The first thing you need to ask yourself, is what is it being used for,
Gaming- would be better to get a high speed proccesser, lots of storage, good graphics and sound card, pretty much a top of the line computer.
Multi media(as in photos and music)- high storage, good graphics and sound card
internet surfer- pretty much a basic computer, with high ram
you can go to dell or alienware to have custom built computers or laptops, theres more, but those i think would be best

the new HP's a great. and the new dells are decent as well. My aunt has an HP with most of the capabilities of my Mac, and my mother got a new Dell XPS and it is nice as well. Although in my opinion Windows Vista is problematic, so see if you can get one with the normal XP.
