You don't need a telescope, your eyes will do fine. It will look like a star.

Well, technically you can see it with the naked eye. It would appear as a reddish star in the southeastern summer night sky, if you are in the mid-U.S. (I'm not sure of the location during winter).
If it's the planet's surface texture you're looking for, you might be able to see it with a good enough telescope. I couldn't get a close enough picture to make out the planet's surface with my telescope. And my telescope wasn't cheap one either, but it was rather old.
If you do use a telescope, you should read the instruction manual carefully (I have a link to a website where you can download manuals below) or get assistance from an amateur stargazer or someone who stargazes for a hobby -- as it takes certain calibration for various objects (due to varying distances from the stars to Earth).

If you have'nt got an astronomy mag...buy one for this month and find out if the planet mars is to appear. It should look like another star...but looks red or bright orange. You can see the general outline and markings with a good pair of binoculars but you can see it more in detail with a astronomy telescope with the objective lens of 4 inches across.

Mars can be seen with the naked eye as a distinctly red star to see any surface detail requires a telescope

You can easily see Mars with the naked eye, but you do need to know where to look. I will look red. If you want, you can use a telescope. This will allow you to see detail, such as the ice capes, on Mars.

It looks like a bright reddish star but you can tell the difference because planets give a steady reflected light whereas star emit their own light which appears to twinkle.
