I am a professional mole trapper. There are no man made or natural deterrent's for moles and shrews-the only way to CONTROL them is by trapping (killing) them. For moles we use a scissor trap that is made specifically for the purpose at hand. You must read the instructions or view the video tap.
Please understand the word is control-you will never eliminate them. Persistence will be the key for gaining control of your grounds.
Vibration devices-DO NOT WORK
Poisons DO NOT WORK
Water down the tunnel-WASTE OF WATER
Go on line-search for mole trappers-they have the traps and videos which show set-up.
My partner and I have trapped several thousand and believe me-we have heard it all.
For those who think we are cruel I must take exception-to live trap a mole will force it to starve to death in a matter of 5-6 hours-this is due to their high metabolism.

I remember as a child my Dad having a mole party - he invited loads of friends around and they were all stationed in groups sitting in lawn chairs around a hole with a shovel or a spade ready to bang the molehills if a mole came up. Not sure it was hugely successful as everyone got drunk - fun though! I believe there is a sonic thingy you can stick in the ground which scares them off. Personally I just paved over my garden as I couldn't be bother mowing!

Take a road flare and ignite it and then place it in the mole hole.Cover up the mole hole(s) so that no smoke can escape. The road flare deposits alot of sulfur in the holes and tunnels that the moles make and they can't stand the smell of sulfur.
It may take a few times of doing this but it deffenitly works, and is very cheap to use.

We had a lot of mole hill in our garden last year. During the summer months we mowed the lawn every 2 weeks the vibration keeps them away. They have not returned over the winter, so maybe you could try this.

There is a plant you should put in your beds call "Capers Burge". Poisons them when they eat it. Other wise you have to use the old cane and bottle method. Push canes deep into the groound at intervals and put plastic bottles over the end of them so they hang in the air. When the mole underground hits the cane the bottle rattles and the noise frightens the mole away.

If you are really determined, wire up a small loudspeaker (buy one with plastic diaphragm so it's waterproof), wrap it up in a small platic bag and bury it about a 20ins underground near where they like to burrow. Feed it a signal of around 300-400Hz from a signal generator if you can get hold of one, or play it organ music in a loop. It should drive them nuts.
You can, of course, buy mole chasers which do the same thing.

We use the traps the are scissor shaped, I have caught about 5. The stay away until another one moves in from the neighbors lot.
Pesticides are sometimes used to kill the grubs that they feed on. The only problem is that they will tear up your yard looking for grubs before moving on.

The presence of moles is indicative of the presence of grubs or other insect . Go to your local hardware store and get a grub/insect poison. Kill the food source and the moles will leave.

Well there are 2 ways that worked for my Uncle and my Dad.. you get this wheat and arsenic mixture put it in the hole they eat it and died.. they never came back and they ate all my Dad's artichoke plants. The other way is to flood the hole with water from the garden hose. The animal will come out the other end eventually or did another tunnel away from the water. If he comes out you can trap him and take him to animal shelter.
