I am turning 27 this year, and will be starting college with a pre-med major. I am looking for feedback from others who have sought a medical career many years after high school. Is it harder, especially when you have kids? I've been getting a lot of negative feedback from my friends, who mostly tell me its a waste of time. I'd love to hear from anyone who was/is in this situation, and get some general advice about the best ways to go about accomplishing this. Thanks! :)

If this is where your interests and talents are, go for it. It will be harder. Age doesn't matter as much as it used to. You have to be an expert at time management and have backup systems in place. Get plenty of sleep and rest when you can. I went to nursing school in my late 30's; I could have gone pre-med with my grades. Just make sure you can physically do all this. It is emotional draining at times, with lack of sleep and all the studying you have to do. You're lucky; at least you have had the science in school before you started. My College Degree in the 1970's didn't have that much science and math to help. I had to take all new sciences and brush up on my math, but a lot of my courses did count and help. I had always wanted to be a MD and had always kept up in this field all my life. So that gave me an advantage that the younger students did not have. So follow your dreams. You have nothing to lose.

I haven't done it, but I'm a nurse with lots of friends who did it.
It requires alot of sacrifice, but you'll be happy you did it. Your friends are probably jealous of your capabilities. They may not always be your friends, but you'll find new ones who are more goal-oriented in years to come.
Don't let them stop you from reaching for your dreams. You can do it.
Besides, 27 isn't old. I went back to school to become a nurse at 31; there were plenty of people there who were older than me.

Good luck in your endevors. You can do it!!!
