I've had a really bad year so far and I really want to go away, but I can't take much more time off than that at one time. But a friend of mine said that I should only go to india when I can stay for a few weeks (which I won't be able to do for like 4 years).

It depends on where you are coming from. I go to India all the time for a few days here and a few days there but I live in the middle east where its only a 2 or 3 hour flight. There is nothing wrong with going to India for 5 days but be prepared to stay in one city and the surrounding area. From Europe you could do it but I dont know if 5 days is enough to justify the airfare. From the states or Australia I would say you need at least 7 days to justify the trip and expense. India is fantastic and to be honest anything less than 6 months is truly insufficiant, but 5 days would be cool if you stayed in one small area or a single city.

If you are coming from the US it is way too short. Between layovers, security, and customs the flight takes 2 days both ways. When you land you will be either sick or disoriented for the first 2-3 days. It would be a waste of money. Even Australia would be a bad idea for that length of time. If you are on the east coast go to the Caribbean or Ireland, if you are on the west coast Hawaii or maybe Japan.

My first thought is 5 days is too much in India, but to each his own. If you really want to explore a large country you would need more than 5 days. Can you imagine coming to USA for 5 days? Maybe if you just want to see Manhatten. Try Thailand. Beaches are great.

If you wish to visit a country that size- plan to stay for a few weeks.
If you need a short break, and wish to go abroad, visit a smaller country. India is large - and needs time to look around.

I suggest Luxemburg - Small enough - which is in europe.
Switzerland is nice too, but that one will take some more time.

When you consider how long it takes to get there and back, I think 5 days is pretty short. How about 7 or 8 ??

It is a big country. I would find a smaller one for a week. Maybe Australia, or Ireland.
