Well, just to clear this up - Bracknell is a hole!

Farnham however is lovely and would get my vote

Guildford, Dorking, Windsor, Eton still remain quaint. Nothing much in Ascot apart from racecourse and expensive houses. Bracknell forget it and Wokingham not far behind. Virginia Water very similar to Ascot, leafy as you call it. Farnham isn't bad, bit like Guildford if I remember rightly....without the huge hill. Haslemere...don't know and Oxshott the same, I have been to/through them but they must be pretty nondescript cos I can't specifically remember them. Hope that helps.

Windsor and Eton may be suggested for their obvious historical connections, and I heartily agree with Carl N about Bracknell. I like Virginia Water personally, it is quite different from the Virginia Water in Amercia, but a beautiful area. There are some lovely houses built along the riverside, and it is a very sought after place to live in by film actors. In the "Fab-Fifties" film stars like glamorous Diana Dors used to live there.

You didn't include Winchester on your list. I think Winchester is the prettiest town in all of England, and its only an hour away from London Waterloo by rail.
