Which of these wealthy commuter towns has preserved its history and character, while also being picturesque, verdant and quaint, and at the same time tasteful and elegant.

Bracknell is a dump. Oxshott, Virginia Water and Ascot are just dormitory suburbs really rather than being 'towns'. The others are all very pleasant places - though Guildford is a bit too big for comfort and I'd put it at the bottom of the list. They would all be a lot pleasanter still if they weren't swamped with crazy amounts of traffic - this to me spoils all of them to a large extent.

Whilst I'd have to agree with the above, Farnham and Guildford are however both very leafy and retaining of character whilst also being of a larger size, well relatively.

I'd say Windsor.
Farnham is a dump and full of arty-farty art students. They themselves ruin the look of the place. The only day that Farnham looks smart is on graduation day when a lot of the students are dressed in their graduation outfit.

You didn't include Winchester on your list. I think Winchester is the prettiest town in all of England, and its only an hour away from London Waterloo by rail.

I'd prefer Guildford. It's not too tiny and doesn't have the tourist traffic of Windsor or Ascot.
