The difference is to allow you to put in paired ram.

For example - if you buy a nice pair of ram cards that come as a 'paired' set then these two cards should go in slots of the same colour.

If you bought cheap un-paired ram then use anything.

If your unsure then use any - it wont damage the ram or the pc.

I have struggled with this as well in the past, but the answer evidently is simple. The RAM slots on your motherboard signify the different types of RAM that you system can handle: DDR (Blue) vs SDRam (Black or Grey). The difficult part is in identifying the type of RAM you currently have in your system and matching it the type you want to purchase. One slot should have 2 notches on the motherboard and the other only has one notch. It is not wise to "mix and match" as other answerer's have suggested. Some motherboards will lock up and others will give intermittent "Blue-screen of death" messages.

Even the DDR RAM has different speed requirements (PC100 or PC133) so be careful not to mix up the speeds.
I have included a website that may explain it a little better with pictures.

A lot of mobos that have DDR RAM have two different colored slots. Read your manual to make sure, but the ones I have worked on use one color for a pair of RAM sticks and the other for another set of RAM sticks. Say that you wanted to upgrade to 3GB of RAM, and you have 4 DIMM slots, the DIMM slot closest to the CPU is the number 1 slot, so insert the first stick of 512 RAM here. If it is blue, the next stick of 512 RAM will go into the other blue DIMM slot. Your 2-1GB sticks would go into the black DIMM slots.

The 4 ram slots you have can be used by 4 different ram modules. I don't know why but if you are inserting 1GB of ram, then there will be an increase in performance if you insert two 512MB ram modules one in the blue slot and the other in the black slot. Of course the colors may be different in different motherboards.

XBOX 360 is 20x's extra appropriate than PS3. the only reason i might get a PS3 is for the Blu-Ray participant and the unfastened on line gaming. the photographs is sooo a lot smoother and extra appropriate on the XBOX 360. Plus, maximum of PS3's video games are starting to be avialiable for the XBOX 360 now which contain Tekken and GTA...

What motherboard you have would help to answer that question. If it's like one of my old ones, it will be something like 2 slots for SDRAM and 2 slots for DDRAM. You can't use all 4 slots at the same time if thats the case.
