I am 24 yrs old and have a mortgage in the u.k. I left school at 16 to join the Royal Navy, obtained a degree in marine engineering and recently left to work as a Marine Engineer at a local company. I have a fiancee and dog and must admit that i currently feel very unfufilled. All my life i have wanted to do something creative for a living and it would be a dream come true for me to one day become a big movie director, my fiancee has read some of my attempted stories and she thinks they are very good which is an opinion i can trust because she has covered screenwriting in her English Degree.
The thing is... Although i know this is what i want to do i am also fully aware that to become a huge movie director the odds must be about 100 million to one. I can't seem to justify devoting my life to this dream and as a result not progressing as best i can with my current career as an engineer. Do i persue my desire or should i just accept the position that i find myself in?

We all need our dreams of something greater than we are to keep us going. This one is obviously a tough one but do it in stages. Keep up your day job but take courses part time in subjects that will build towards your goal. Accept that while it'll never happen if you don't chase it and work hard, you may also never get as far as you'd like, but you may well get a hell of a lot further than anyone would ever guess right now. A cliche but true: a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and every journey is made up of single steps, one after another, building on each other.

Do it. No one should never accept "unfulfilled". Keep moving unless you get fulfilled. Even if you aren't successful you'll have many more interesting experiences just by trying than you would by sticking with something that doesn't rev your engine. You have nothing to lose except a career in engineering. You don't like engineering so what will you have lost? Nothing. Good luck. And if you do make it, I'm trying to be scriptwriter so contact me.

There is nothing to stop you making your own short film and entering it for the short film award at The Cannes Festival. That would be a fantastic way to get 'noticed' in the film industry. You would then get backing straight away of some sort. Then take it from there. I have also seen short films submitted by ordinary members of the public on television-channel four I think. I can't remember the channel for definite but there are so many channels now you will get it played by at least one of them if your film is good enough.Good luck.

Keep your job and in your spare time produce some short films.
This way you will be able to gain a little bit of experience and a small portfolio.
you should always follow your dreams!!!
everybody wants to be famous these days, this could work for you and also against you.
You could put a add in your local paper for people who fancy being in a low budget film (this inclines low wages, if any) and gives you a project to get your teeth into to see if it really is what you want to do.
