Me and a colleague were discussing, I seemed to remember there was some theory that humans lived semi-aquatically for a while we left the oceans way back in our evolutionary history, my colleague hadn't heard anything about that - any theories?!

Yes, remember it well from somewhere ! This is E. Haeckel's Ricapitualation theory; His said that "ontongeny recapitualates phylogeny". Briefly, he proposed that
as an organism develops (Ontogeny), it repeats (recapitualates) or goes through the evolutionary past of it's ancestors (phylogeny). We (humans) briefly have gill slits while in the womb, that eventually (I believe) turn into the inner ear bones. See the reference below:

I like to think I know more about the evolutionary cycle of humans more than the next guy, but i have never heard of such a theory. Could amphibians hold the mental capacity of early humans?

Not amphipian but aquatic, yes.

It's called the Aquatic Ape Hypothesis and there seems to be quite a lot of evidence to back it up; Hairlessness, bipedalism, breath control, fat distribution etc. There's a wikipedia page that's worth a read.

Roundabout the time we traded gills for lungs, we would've been amphibious. Fish, then amphibians, then mammals would be my best guess.

So when do we get to be reptiles or birds!
