First of all, this brandi chick needs to chill out. Petsmart keeps their fish in small tanks because that isnt their permanent home. They stay there for at the most, a few weeks and then they go to a new home. Second, I think Blood Parrot fish are gorgeous and should be left in the group of 4 without other fish. They really do get pretty big. I found a pair that I wanted to badly. They would follow your finger on the glass, play with anything new that you dropped in the tank and they would nibble on your finger if you put it in the tank and they were at least 5 inches long already. If you really much get more fish cause the tank looks too empty go to Petsmart. Ask about that fish would go with them. If one near you is anything like the petsmart here, you are going to have more help than you know what to do with. Good luck

Just for the record, blood parrots are NOT south american cichlids, in fact, they do not even occur in the wild. They are a hybrid fish created by people, not nature. They are probably a cross of the gold severum and red devil cichlids, which are south american, but I just want to make it known that these are not a natural fish, and neither are the jellybean parrots, which are often injected with dye to attain the colors they have. They will get VERY large, a friend of mine has two and they are about the size of my hand now and only a year old. They are also sterile, for the most part, but try and try to have fry...they lay eggs, and then the eggs rot. It's a very sad thing to watch again and again. For the petsmart girl, you guys should be ashamed of the fish you carry and the tank sizes you advocate. It equals out to animal abuse to me to say that fish only grow to the size of their tank, and that foot long fish like the common plec and kissing gourami, blood parrot, banded leporinus, jack dempseys and oscars can live in 10-20 gallon tanks. So, as for the petsmart "PET EXPERT"
You can take your remarks and shove them, since you don't know what you're talking about in the first place. Or maybe you do, and that makes it even worse. Anyways, sorry for the rant, and your tank will be full when your parrots are full grown. Even if you upsized your tank, there are very few fish that they will tolerate, though armored catfish and plecs will sometimes make it with them.

Blood parrots will do best when kept just like you have them, a tank to themselves. A 40 is barely enough for the 4 blood parrots and would be way overcrowded by adding anything large enough to hold their own with your fish. Be sure you have a good filter and clean the tank and filter weekly and you shouldn't have any trouble from the minor over stocking.

You're good on fish. The blood parrots will fill up the 40 gallons. Don't get any more.

If you had a larger tank you may be able to add a few other South American Ciclids with them, like Sevrums or Jack Dempseys. The only problem is that Blood Parrots get to be 6-8 in. each so just the four of them is going to be about 30-35gallons of water. You may be able to add some Sevrums because they stay relativley small.
