Not until the Renaissance were women accepted as actors - women who preformed were considered low class or loose. They were not allowed because it would be difficult to prove their virtue if they traveled all over without a chaperon and even then they might be called upon to kiss or display an act unseemly for a woman. It really wasn't a discrimination per say but a social effort to protect a woman's marital value.
