Brits call a flash light a torch. They use electricity from battery to either super heat a wire filament or to stimulate a light emitting diode (new school).

Under primitive settings, a torch is created using a stick and some flexible fiber/cloth. A fuel like gas, or tree sap, or wax is put on the torch. They burn like a big candle.
