Hanibal rising is a book...it takes place BEFORE Silence of the Lambs (and Red Dragon) basically telling you why Hannibal is such a monster and so feared (Neither Silence of the Lambs or Red Dragon really get into his character...he just is)...both SIlence of the Lambs and Red Dragon are stories that involve Hannibal..but do not center on him...so reading Hannibal Rising is not a requirement for them

Silence of the Lambs was the first book/movie that was about Hannibal Lector. You would probably understand all the following books/movies better if you seen it or read it. Silence of the Lambs was the best of all of them anyway.

Why, it IS a book!

If you've seen the rest of the movies, then go ahead and see it as a movie first.

However, if you've never seen any of the movies in this series, or read any of the books, then start with Silence of the Lambs.

To me, the book was much much more disturbing that the movie was.
