McAfee is the best, but the regular virus definition downloads are the backbone of a good, solid defense. It is simple, yet effective, with minimal consumption of system resources.

Norton messes the computer up too much and consumes large amounts of resources (RAM, CPU, etc.). Free anti-viruses come with spyware and advertisements, weak virus definition support (if any), and security risks (some software is actually designed to give hackers stealthy control of your computer) as a hack disguise as an anti-virus.

I've used McAfee for several years, after cleaning Norton off my system (not a simple or easy task), and it has been effective, cheap, unobtrusive, and reliable. McAfee virus definition updates download and install very quickly for me.

I have tried three and these are my opinions on them. Norton I think sucks. I then tried Kaspersky which was good at detecting virus' but was always popping up and asking about all sorts of harmless programs ( I like an anti-virus that is quiet and just does it's job) so I now have AVG 7.5 and am very happy. I don't even know it is there but I do an automatic scan each evening and it does a good job at picking any up such as virus', adware, spyware etc. I do also have an adware program on my computer but I would recommend AVG for sure.

If you want to buy, best is
BitDefender, followed by Kapersky.

Actually, free ones are good enough.
I use Avast.
You can also try AOL Active Virus Shield, which is powered by Kapersky. And also Avira AntiVir Personal Edition.

These are the top in the market.

kapersky paid
avira personal edition free because it has higest detection rates than all free av's and even most paid one's here is the site.

Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic reliably protects your private computer against dangerous viruses, worms, Trojans and costly dialers.

More than 15 million users worldwide trust in the reliable protection of Avira AntiVir. And this is no coincidence at all: Avira has gained several awards. The product combines first-class detection rates and ease of use with a top performance that protects your computer safely and hardly burdens older PCs.

Why buy. You can get the best protection available by downloading AVG 7.5 at http://www.grisoft.com and you might want to try their anti spyware program for free as well. Of course you can get spyware protection using windows defender, another free download from MS.

I have not had a problem since I installed NOD-32. They send daily updates to stay ahead of new viruses.

Norton is the best. And you can currently get 6 months of norton free! All you have to do is download "googlepack" from google. It is only for windows xp though.
