If you have XP you really don't need any 3rd party application to do this. I connect to my home PC all the time using remote desktop.
Enable remote desktop by right clicking My Computer, select Properties. Select the Remote tab, and check the box "Allow users to connect remotely to this computer." Click the "select remote users" button and add a user account (one with a good password). Make sure the guest account is not listed, if so, remove. At work, START - RUN - type mstsc and hit enter. You'll see the Remote Desktop Connection dialog. Enter the IP of your home computer and hit connect.
This assumes that you know your IP addess. Note, if you have a firewall, you'll also need to configure it to forward port 3389 to the internal IP of your computer.

You would need a program such as Pcanywhere installed on both machines unless you have someone at home who can start a remote assistant from your machine. Pc anywhere etc would be easier and faster.
