I know that in some states a landlord must sign a waver saying that there is no lead in the household at the time of the inception of a lease. Also, I personally, though will not specify relationship, know a few landlord who do have more trouble with tenants leaving the place a mess and just skipping out all together, so the tenant landlord battle goes both ways.

It is illegal for a landlord to discriminate against a tenant in cases of race. Check out the office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity here:

http://www.hud.gov/offices/fheo/index.cfm

Also, most states have laws protecting tenants from lead-based paint, and any good and decent landlord knows about the need to disclose any known or potential lead-based paint hazards to renters of their property, especially if the propery is built before 1978. If the property is built afterward, you probably don't have much to worry about.

Regardless of these things, if you have a landlord that is obviously a bigot, I would consider renting somewhere else. The stress isn't worth it - and I wouldn't give a person like that a dime of my money.

Call your local health department. They may be able to give you information on what to do and what laws there are to protect and help you. You may be able to have the paint tested yourself. Even if he paints over it. Lead poisoning is very dangerous for children. If you suspect that there is lead paint in your house do not let it go. Make sure that it gets checked and removed if it is there!

first off he could put twenty gallons of paint on and if there is lead they'll still find it you have many rights as a tenant and you can find them all in your local library we had to go uo agnist our landloard because we had a water leak outside and not only did she not want to help us pay a 300 dollar for 1 month bill she wouldn't get the leak fixed we ended up in court and we won shortly after asbestes was found in another one of her properties and it was fixed while it was being cleaned by hasmat she had to pay for the family to stay at a local hotel and it was all about knowing your right i have to run my baby has a appt at doc if you more info e mail me and i will get back to you when i get home learn your rights and when you tell your landloard you know what they are i can guarntee he's gonna be pissed let me know if you need anything we live in florida
