I am looking for a new washing machine with hot and cold fill, but only cold fill seems to be available. My friend told me that is is supposed to be more eco friendly, but i cant see how as it takes longer to heat for a hot wash esspecialy as the cold water is straight from the mains, thus using more energy to heat the water.

I deliver these every day, and this is a very common question.

You can get hot and cold fill machines, but i think it is mostly Whirlpool that do them.

The reason you have just a cold fill is that it is more efficient; the water from the hot pipe is much higher than 40 degrees. You then use the cold water to cool it down, a lot of water is then pumped straight down the drain.

A cold fill machine works by heating the water itself to the right temperature. It does this very quickly and uses much less water. It saves water and saves electricity. I think however, the wash does take a bit longer.

All you have to do is go to a plumbing shop and get a blanking cap, this screws over the existing hot pipe so you don't have to worry about the tap leaking, then just connect the cold pipe.

Its all to do with Marketing, the latest thing is A rating appliances, and to achieve this it means washer can only do this by being cold fill only. I agree with you, if you've hot water either in your tank or a combi boiler, it must be cheaper to use that. There are a few hot/cold fill machines still out there, check out John Lewis web site, they are mainly Bosch, which are not that cheap, but they will last a lot longer than all the other rubbish out there.

You can get hot and cold washers but you will find that they are a lot more expensive than the cold fill ones
I asked when i bought mine why the washers were cold fill
The answer was that it is more economical to use a cold water fill these days also that's why you find that soap powders advise you to wash at 30 degrees

You don't need to heat the water as it is better on a cold wash, especially for whites and the soap powders today are specially concocted for cold water.
