Could I just go out and buy a new modem and it'll work as good as new? My ISP isn't helping very mush as they are changing their name and every time i phone thei computers are down... Apparently i need a modem that uses a USB connection... not ethernet...

Hmmm.

If you are referring to a DSL modem you can use either USB or ethernet connections. However, with a USB connection you will need to install drivers to make it work. Could be your ethernet card too.

Are you getting a green link light when you connect the modem to the ethernet card?
Who is you Internet Service Provider?

A standard analog modem uses a serial or parallel port.

Ive had this problem before. The modem went bad.
