I just checked my bank account and it says I have a negative balance. I guess what happened was Friday I paid my rent and that next day (Sat.) it had already posted to my checking account. I was supposed to be paid that same Friday as well. My employer was late with our checks and I had to wait until Saturday to get my money, unfortunately by that time it was too late. The rent check had already posted and I did not have enough in the account to cover it. I checked my account today and I have over $200.00 in overdraft fees, and my paycheck still hasn’t posted. So I was being charged on all those little things I purchased like gas, food, etc. If I call my bank and explain what had happened is it possible to have those removed? I bank with Bank one and have never had any other account problems. I though I was ok since I wrote the check Friday and was going to deposit the money on Saturday, but my apartment complex beat me too it.

I contacted my bank today and am only responsible for any fees assessed before I made the deposit. I will only have to pay 1/3 of the fees!

Yes, you can. I have done that with another bank. Go into the bank and ask to talk to somebody about your account (not the teller, but the new account rep). Start as saying you are very confused and see if he/she can help you figure out what went wrong with your account. Explain in the past the rent check was never posted on the same day and that the pay check was always on time. Say that is why you weren't worried and didn't even check to see if everything was as usual. And say you had no idea the pay check was late since there was no warning from your employer. This is very important; you have to say IT WAS YOUR FAULT. but also say you were just shocked to see the amount you were charged. Then say ALTHOUGH THEY HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO CHARGE YOU, you just want to know if there isANYTHING they can do, since YOU ARE A LOYAL CUSTOMER of the bank for a long time and like to stay that way. Basically you have to make them feel sorry for you. I got my fee reduced to half by doing that. Afterward, write a nice letter praising that person.

Since this is the first time you have had any problems with your bank it doesn't hurt to ask, but I'm guessing they are gonna say too bad. I hope you learned an important lesson. Don't write a check until you are sure you have the money in your account. Also you should talk to your employer and tell them that you need that money to pay your rent. If they are supposed to give you a check on a certain day, they need to have it to you on that day.

That's why you never write a check unless you know for sure that the money is in the account.
If your employer was supposed to pay you on Friday and they did not. Force the issue and make them pay the overdraft fees.
You can always petition the bank to remove the fees. But why should they? It wasn't their fault that you didn't have enough money to cover your checks and you knew the penalties for overdrafting.
Perhaps you can get overdraft protection on your account.

It won't hurt to ask, but don't be surprised if they turn you down.
It is YOUR responsibility to make sure you have funds available in your account BEFORE you write the check. Technically, this is called check passing and it is illegal (although you won't usually be charged unless you have intent to defraud).
I would recommend you start putting some money ($500-1000) in a savings account and use it as personal overdraft protection as well as an emergency fund (in case your employer ever decides to pull this again). Many banks will allow you to formally link your savings account to the checking as the overdraft account, so you wouldn't even have to do anything.
Let this be a(n expensive) lesson on NSF.

Esp. if someone at the local branch knows you; go in and talk w/them.
It never hurts to ask; even on the phone. Bank One is pretty good & you will probably have to negotiate. They may only take off some; but, that is better than none!
Do you have overdraft protection ?? If not, see if you can get it. It helps w/these fauxpas.

It's doubtful, but if this is your first "offense", it's worth asking. (Use the "oversight" excuse.) Most often, the banks tell you "you aren't supposed to write a check unless you have money in the account" or something like that.

No, the check went through before you had the funds in the bank to cover it. Plain and simple. They will not remove the fees. Don't know what the other answerers are thinking, but the overdraft fee stands.

It's your responsibility to ensure that all your outlays (checks, direct debits, etc.) are covered.
Having said that, if you call their customer service number and threaten to close all your accounts with them and go to a new bank, they might waive the fees. But it's entirely up to them. You're at their mercy.

It wouldn't hurt to talk to them. They may, in the name of customer relations, refund some of the fees. But I wouldn't count on it.
