Functions of Poverty:
1) The existence of poverty ensures that society's "dirty work" will be done.
2) Since the poor are required to work at low wages, they subsidize a variety of economic activities that benefit the affluent.
3) Poverty creates jobs for a number of occupations and professions that serve or "service" the poor, or protect the rest of society from them.
4) The poor buy goods others do not want and thus prolong the economic usefulness of such goods - day-old bread, secondhand clothes, and deteriorating automobiles and buildings.
5) The poor can be identified and punished as alleged or real deviants in order to uphold the legitimacy of conventional norms.
6) Poverty helps to guarantee the status of those who are not poor. In every hierarchical society, someone has to be at the bottom.
7) The poor help to keep the aristocracy busy, thus justifying its continued existence.
8) The poor facilitate and stabilize the American political process. Because they vote and participate in politics less than other groups, the political system is often free to ignore them.

While that is an amazing concept that many people can't fathom for an ungodly reason, they can't because they simply have no money. Sucks, huh? Well, the problem isn't with the "poor" people, it is a problem that liberals and the Government have brought onto themselves. You see, while liberals tax the rich then give to the poor, there are the "rich" (aka EMPLOYERS) who can't further support their EMPLOYEES. It is such a simple concept. Yep, with all the tax money gone to waste... to the drunk guy who just won't get off his butt and perhaps better himself to be a giving member of society... the employers cannot support their employees anymore; that gives you rising numbers of unemployment all over the country. The employers also have to raise prices to compensate- raised prices affect everything negatively in a poor economy. That is where the economy takes a huge downturn. You have people losing jobs, raised prices, and small businesses, including some big, going out of business. The failing businesses are like permanent stamps to a crappier economy. Those are permanently lost jobs, not including a stunted growing and prospering country. Then you have the people who receive the government given services who will, most likely, stay right where they are- paid for by somebody else and helpless because they've never had to work for anything.. they like it that way, sadly. The tax money should be used to help people jump start their lives. College scholarships for instance; the money should be looked at as an allowance and a small supporting factor for the beginning stages of adult hood for those in REAL need. CATCH a fish for a man, feed him for a day. TEACH a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime...

I disagree, but very good point. It makes as much sense as taxing the crap out of the rich. I was always thought a flat tax was the only fair tax, not a flat rate, a flat amount. I don't suggest a flat tax, but I'm not under the delusion that taking more of someones money because I want it to go to someone else is fair.
