I remember watching the beginning intro to Speed Racer but I was too young to recall any of the episodes. The first anime cartoon that I watched where I could actually comprehend the story lines was Battle of the Planets. How about you?

Attn: Queen of Cards, Amazon sells the Little Mermaid anime movie that you mentioned. It's under the following label: The Little Mermaid - Based on Hans Christian Andersen's Classic Tale (UAV Corporation). I also watched that film as a kid and was deeply sadden by it too.

Kimba The Lion, although it had many other names. It was on Fox Network before the kids cartoon show hosted by the astronaut began. Once Fox began showing several kids cartoons everyday after school Kimba was taken off the air. They are actually selling some of the original episodes in many Wal-Marts and K-Marts for $5.00. Amusingly, Disney was going to do a remake of this famous anime, but due to many disagreements and license problems they dropped the idea. Instead of scrapping the material they had already began working on, we have now what is known as the all famous Lion King movie. Which in comparison Lion King is a lot better. After that it was Thunder-Cats and Silver Hawks.

LOL I had such a crush on Racer X when I was a kid...

But even before that, I remember seeing an anime version of the Little Mermaid that had the real ending where she died. I've never been able to find a copy of that. Sigh.

The earliest anime I can ever remember watching that I could comprehend was, like you, Battle of the Planets. However, the earliest I ever watched was Pole Position (which I think was a Japanese thing...) still, I loved everything when I was young.

I think the earilest anime I ever watched was pokemon. I thought it was really cool in the first few years, but then I realize it's always the same plot structure. Ash and gang go somewhere, pokemon fight, team rocket tries to steal pikachu, ash and gang beats them, sends them blasting off again, and end the happy day.
