Wear something cute! I don't think that it has to be a dress, you know what I mean? If you aren't the dress kind of girl, wear a cute denim miniskirt with leggings from the Gap (gap.com). Then pair it with ballet flats (they have the cutest ones ever at Gap and gap.com) and a cute top. Preferably pink. If you really need a dress, try the juniors sections in the Bon-Ton, Macy's and J.C. Penny.

Tell her how you feel, but be willing to compromise. If it's a special occasion where everyone else will be dressed the same, and only for a few hours, consider wearing what she wants, it won't kill you. you may feel more self conscientious about being dressed differently from everyone else than you think.

I have some tailored black pinstripe pants with a wide flare at the bottom that I wear with chunky heeled black leather boots, a white tank, and a short black sweater. it's trendy, comfortable and dressy enough that even if everyone else is in dresses I feel classy and beautiful. Maybe something similar could be a good compromise?

If you don't want to wear a dress, let your mom know your feelings, both of you. Then come to an agreeable compromise.
