Isn't it amazing that, twenty years ago, community guidelines would have this question deleted just for me...

40 years ago...possibly, 20 years ago Boy George had topped the UK & US Charts - he'd even appeared in the A-Team!

I think you're over reacting. Twenty years ago was 1987. I didn't know anyone who was gay that was afraid of being run out of town for being out of the closet.
