membrane proteins do not serve as antibodies.....

Here's a list:

1) transport of materials across the membrane (including channels and ion pumps)
2) enzymatic activity
3) cell-to-cell recognition (through carbohydrates of teh cell surface
4) signal reception and transduction
5) hooks cells together
6) anchors the extracellular matrix

Membrane proteins can be used for many different purposes, i'll give you two which can hopefully help you while you think about the other two. First they can be used as channels to allow different molecules in or out of the cell. They can also be used to attach a ligand molecule in a signal transduction pathway (for example binding a hormone and causing a response in the cell).
Keep thinking about it! There's certainly way more than 4 answers to this question :) Good luck!
