I was just notified that my office was getting a server to net work all of our PC's together. Whats the purpose of this and can they go in my computers history from their office and see what websites I have been on? I am looking for another job and I dont want them to be able to see that. Why would they want to net work all of our PC's together? There is nothing on mine that they need.

Networking is commonly used to shared resources. It allows a company to have fewer printers and to allow people to easily shared files and other information.

It also allows a measure of security as illegal activities or web sites can be blocked by the administation. You may find out you cannot read webmail anymore or that certain sites are no longer accessable.

In short networks save money and control resources. It is very common and you will see it in most companies.

Yes, any administrator worth his scruffy shows can check where you are going on the web. Plus if is very easy to capture your keystrokes, so unless you are really trusting, I would not enter any personal passwords on a network.

There are many reasons to network computers (it's one word, not two); one reason is to be able to share network devices, such as a printer... why buy several printers, when one high quality office network printer would suffice for all? Networked PCs & devices saves time and money... depending on the new network administrator, (yes, through network monitoring, etc.)they may be able to see everything you've done and every site you've gone to... even access your files! Remember, those files aren't your personal anything... it all belongs to the company!... it's their PC, their building, their internet access provider, and their paid employee... that's why the police don't need warrants, when investigating an individual's work-place computer, just the boss's permission, (without the employees knowledge). I understand that you're leaving this job (or want to) but for now, you've entered into an agreement with your employer: an honest days' work, for an honest days' pay... you're now breaching that agreement, by using company time and resources to look for employment elsewhere... or chatting, or whatever else you do on the internet... that is NOT company related. I understand that most ppl do this, but it doesn't make it right, does it? Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to get back to work! LOL

They most likely will be able to see your computer's history. Networks are very important to businesses. They allow the use of software that can allow the computers to work together on projects, as well as communication between staff members.

If you are a good worker, and don't waste a lot of time surfing the web for personal reasons, you've got nothing to worry about. A couple of fellows were fired at my place of work, because they were surfing porn sites while they were supposed to be working.
That's very bad form, and I had no sympathy for them.

In short, keep your work computer for work only. It belongs to the people who pay your salary.

Networking is good for data management. If you're working with some type of proprietary business management software, a server will help. Yes they will be able to access your computer and see what you're up to. Just erase your explorer history when your done, or you can download a file-lock from download.com this password protects any folder you want if you want to put resumes or photos in it and whatnot.

Networking the computers to a SERVER allows each computer to back up its files SAFELY and EFFECTIVELY< so that if your computer DIES or anyone elses, their information will have been backed up...

Also a server enables everyone to PRINT to a PRINTER that is not connected to their own machine....

Most bunisinesses dont use a server to see what youve been doing. If they wanna do that, they will just come straight to your PC...

We have no way of knowing why your company is buying a server.

I would clear your history before they set up the network. Once the network has been set up, they can follow your every use of the scooter.

The reason for a network is so the whole company can work from one server, all sharing the same software and information.

You sound paranoid. What have you been doing on your office PC? Your employer has every legal right to monitor your computer activity.

If your looking for another job, get a home computer and do it there.

Businesses have lots of reasons to "network" their systems and most of the time it's to make the computer systems and communication in an office more efficient. E-mail,; centralized information databases, etc....
