Sophie's Choice, with Meryl Streep and Kevin Klein. It's about the holocaust and her life and she is recalling it to a friend.
You can just feel her sadness throughout the entire movie and in the end you find out why.
She had two small children when the germans were separating who would live and be sent to concentration camps and who would go to the gas chamber (the people didn't know this of course), some pr*ck german soldier looks at her, asks if she is german and christian etc. and gives her a hard time, and then just to be a real b*stard says "you can only take one of your kids with you". She begs him no and he screams CHOOSE or I will send them both to their death!!! Her boy was about 8 and her little girl 2 and I guess she figured she'd pick the one who had the most chance of survival.
So she had to make that choice and says "take my daughter!!!" and they drag her off screaming....that scene was so horrific that I don't think anyone in the theatre wasn't affected. I never forgot that either. That's an old movie from the 80s and well worth the watch.
That was only one small scene of the overall movie...it's really a must see.

Dad
I started crying in the first 10 minutes of this movie and pretty much cried through the whole thing. I went with a large group of both men and women and we were all crying. Afterwards we all wanted to run home and call our dads to say "I Love you" but it was midnight and we didn't think they would appreciate it.

Dr. Zhivago. Not the old, old, old one from the '50s or '60s. The new version with Keira Knightley. It is a tale of infidelity and betrayal and is so sad to see the love of really good, faithful people thrown in the dirt by the unfaithful people they love.

I would have to say that the only movie that really made me cry and not tear up would have to be "The Notebook". The movie was so sad only because it is something that is very true to life and that it happens to a lot of people.
