Limewire tends to be an opensource of a client which serves as a distribution tool on the Gnutella Network.
They believe in open standards, open networks, and that any global networking protocol must have an open source piece at its core if it is to remain uncorrupted. They also thinks that the best people to develop the Gnutella Network and its applications are its users.
Lime Wire LLC hopes to expedite Gnutella research and development by providing the core message passing and file sharing code, so that one need not waste time re-writing it. The combined public efforts of noble individuals will keep Gnutella a virtuous, public network, for the people and by the people. The LimeWire Open Source Project hopes other developers will help to build the network that benefits all people and future generations.
So in short, it is an opensource project which incoporates everyone with diverse ideas and no limitations to exploration, file sharing, and code development.
Music downloaded with Limewire are said to have been legally obtained and, or authorized by CC (creative common) copyright law which allows artist to sample and distribute their songs, but also want their songs protected.
It is an option for the artist to choose:
A) Require attribution? Y/N
B) Allow commercial uses of your work? Y/N
C) Allow modifications of your work? Y/N/Yes as long as others share alike.
In acquiring a license or protection right, the artist get to choose the way they want users get about their song.
With the digitally signed, or licensed song other search engines will some day find it and recognize how it is licensed.
Anyone in search for a partical songs finds it and it's stated that the song is not for commercial use.
Let say that the above options chosen by an artist were:
a) Yes
b) No
c) Yes as long as others share alike.
This would mean that I can download a particular artist music...
use it as long you will give back attribution/credit,
not use it to make money - (e.g. you are working on a class film project).
then share it but alike the license originally signed by artist.
If an individual uses it for any use other than specified, Limewire is never laible.
Hope you will understand.

Limewire doesn't say that you can downloading copyright songs or files. When you download Limewire it takes you to the screen and ask what you will use Limewire for. If you select that you might use Limewire for copyright infringement, then it won't let you download it.

Actually, Limewire is in trouble for this. The RIAA filed charges against them in August (http://www.geocities.com/williampatry875a/Lime_Wire_RIAA_complaint.PDF). The RIAA recently won a similar case against Kazaa, which resulted in a fine of over one hundred million dollars. The legal system moves slowly, but odds are that Limewire will be shut down since the supreme court ruled that companies like them are responsible for allowing their users to commit crimes.

Limewire doesn't say you can download copyrighted songs. It says it is illegal to do that.
You can see on their website that it's only file sharing, doesn't mention anything about copyrighted music.
