Some people will say not to call. I believe this to be incorrect. At one of my jobs thecompany could not decide based on interviews and applications.They waited for the first person who called back and hired that person because she expressed interest.
Do not ask this question of the receptionist. During the interview, get the name of the hiring authority and the date their expect to make a choice.
Most interviewers will ask if you have any quesitons.
Yes, I was wondering if you are the hirign authoring or is their another person involved.
Thank you for your time, can you tell me when you will be making your selection?
Do not call before the selection data and when you call ask for the person whose name you received as the hiring authority.

"Hi my name is ______. I was calling to see if anyone (use a name if you know it) has had a chance to look over my application."
If yes, ask when you can interview. If no, keep calling every day. Calling shows persistance. It lets them know that you're serious about wanting the job. Just don't over do it, call once a day.

Ask if they have had a chance to review your application yet They should be able to say yes or no and tell you when they will be making a decision.
