You can use an epoxy putty to fill in the area. You can shape it like play doh to match the table edge. Unfortunately, the putty is gray or white. You could color it with a stain pen: http://www.minwax.com/products/woodmaint/stain-marker.cfm A lot of hardware stores have putty that comes in stick form. It's easier to work with than putty that comes in a tin.

Any product labeled "stainable putty" is not truthfully labeled. They are NEVER stainable.
