I know it is because I am nervous/stressed.

making them pretty and painting them does not help. I still bite. Getting fake nails acrylic does not help, once off, I bite! nasty nail polish on them, does not help! I will pick at them. I can't possible wear gloves all the time, so that's not a good idea.

i know ultimately it is just self control. but can't get myself to stop this nasty habit!!! been doing it for 19 years!

ANY IDEAS!!!???? THANKS!

You have a nervous tension that makes you bite them. Work on the stress in your life. Try to work out all the tension you have and try to relax and not stress too much. Try to do some hobbies with your hands like painting or needlework or just something that can relax you that uses your hands. Good luck!

You are right it is self control/ will power.
Here's something I found at http://beauty.about.com/cs/gorgeousnails1/ht/stopbitingnails.htm

How To Stop Biting Your Nails

This has to be one of the hardest habits to break, but it can be done. Here are just a few ways to make it easier.

Difficulty: N/A

Time Required: N/A
Here's How:

1. Decide that you are going to stop. Pick a day and say that's it. No more nibbling. Now here are a few little ways to help.

2. There are some bitter tasting liquids that can painted onto the nails. I don't know anyone who actually liked the taste, so this is going to slow you down and give your nails a little time to start growing.

3. The minute you wash your hands, re-apply the liquid mentioned above. This will also focus attention on your hands and the nails which should be visible by now.

4. Keep an emery board in every room and one in your backpack or purse. The minute you notice a snag, use the emery board and not your teeth.

5. Buy a few bottles of pretty polish and some hand cream. You are going to keep your nails polished and your hands soft. In a weeks time, you are going to notice a difference.

6. Once a biter, always a biter. I have stopped, but it only takes a snag for me to revert back to old habits. I have to follow these tips too.

7. You might have been looking for a magical way to stop biting your nails, but I'm afraid that there is no such thing. You simply have to put your mind to it and stop!

8. Will power is an amazing thing. If you want something badly enough, you can do it. If you want pretty nails, you are the only person who can stop it from happening.

As a former nail biter, I can honestly tell you that there's nothing you can do but wait. I bit my nails so bad they would bleed. All my photos, etc., had me hiding my hands or tucking them under. I tried the arcrylics, and fakes. I even tried the polishes (which by the way, I still have one in my cupboard for emergencies). I eventually grew out of it, for the most part. I find now, that if I keep them past a certain point, I'm ok. But if I break one or cut it too short, I will resort to biting again. It's a habit, and provides comfort for your for some reason. It could be stress, or being nervous. You will reach a point where you won't do it anymore. I've been there, I know it's rough going. Hang in there!

hi, I have a lots of friends hwo have same problem.
One got over it. How? well, she went to a manicure and she bought some special nail polish - it tastes nasty! And evrey time she bite her nails, she felt that discusting taste. The taste stayed for almost half an hour. NOW when she tries to bite her nails, she always rember this terrible taste and woala- she dosen't do it anymore.
so, ask from manicurist ;)
and if you don't want that your children would have this problem, then there is one trick what to do. It may look like torture, but its not. When your child is in that age when he/she puts her finger into mouth then just sew the sleeves togheter. My mother did it to me, when I was little and I never had a problem with bitting nails ;)

First I understand I come from a family of nail biters. You hav eto actually think about it all the time. So as soon as you realize your biting, STOP!!! At first you'll only notice after you have destroyed at least one nail after a while you'll get used to it and you'll stop. Doing acrylics helps too cause your less likely to do damage if you have something that think to bite through. Hope my answer helps!!!!!!!

you comprehend what you should do? end studying, flow out and detect a chemist (or drug keep...I dunno what they could call it on your usa), and detect a nail polish there especially for nail biting. once you position it on, that is sparkling and un-noticable. yet once you flow to bite your nails...BAM! The flavor is poor. It tastes like domicile paint mixed with banana. VERY DISGUSTING. you may in common words flavor it although, no longer scent it, so don't worry about the fragrance making you ill. That helps a lot with nail biting. Use it till you end completly, trust me, it extremely works. that is non poisonous, through the way.

I bite mine too. I went and got acrylic nails put on, and I plan on going every 2 weeks to get them balanced so I DON'T bite them. Works for me! Good Luck and God Bless!

Years ago I bit my nails, going to nail shop and having fake tips put on did it for me, my hands looked so beautiful, that I was hooked. I now have strong, beautiful nails.
