Do not buy tickets in advance.

Train/bus tickets are very cheap in Poland, when purchased on cite with local currency. There are plenty of buses and trains available. Eurolines is also much cheaper if you buy tickets in Poland:

In Riga (Latvia) bus station buying tickets in December to Eurolines the price was 1/5 the Internet price!!!

Can't tell you about Krakow, but Prague is pleasantly warm still in October, you might need a jacket when outside. Prague isn't as cheap as it used to be, prices have gone up a bit since I was there first in 2004. I'd say there would be a certain amount of curiosity value in a black American, but I would be wary of making moves on local women unless you are absolutely sure they are unattached. As regards travelling, I would recommend taking the train. It might be cheaper, but it would be much faster. You could also look into flights.
