Number 2 heating oil is almost the same as diesel fuel, the primary difference is that number 2 heating oil has a higher sulfur content. You can use number 2 heating oil in an emergency, but using it regularly will probably void your engine warranty. Don't be fooled by talk of dye, dye in diesel fuel signifies that it is for "off road" use like reefer fuel for refrigerated trailers, farm vehicles etc. Undyed diesel fuel is more expensive because it is low sulfur and meant for use in over the road vehicles. Red dyed diesel is not taxed it is for off road use.

Actually not a whole lot except grade.

Heating oil is "Arctic" grade diesel. It is thinner and does not gel at low temperatures. It has lower lubricating qualities so should not be used in engines in warm weather but is OK in the winter (-30 temperatures).

Heating oil is generally a lower quality than diesel fuel, since it is
intended to be burnt for heat and not in a more demanding application like a diesel engine. The winter/summer differences apply to both fuels, to ensure that they don't get too viscous or solid from wax precipitation to interfere with equipment operation. Manufacturers tailor the fuel according to the climate it is going to. For example fuel going to the interior of BC would have to withstand colder temperatures than fuel going to the lower mainland where it is always warmer.
