We honeymooned in Zihua, which is considered the old acapulco of the 50's, its just a small fishing village that grew into a vacation spot because of the hotels built in Ixtapa.

Just like in those places, the local economy's survive on the tourist dollar, so the government is more than willing and able to provide armed guards to patrol the beaches and towns.

As backwards as mexico is its not so backwards as to shoot itself in the foot by not protecting the tourists that make up the vast majority of the local economy's.

What people dont understand is the legal system of Mexico, if they better understood it, and understood why so many in influential positions are corrupt, then they would understand and be able to avoid things like losing all their money to a con, or ending up in jail for walking back to their hotel rooms smelling of booze at noon. Its not a complex system, its just nothing like ours.

Of course its safe, just as all travel is safe or unsafe in its own respect.

I love Can Cun, just don't drink the water. That is the biggest risk to tourist I have found. Use common sense, if you wouldn't go into a particular neighborhood at home, why go into it in a foreign country? Don't flash money or be obnoxious. Follow the local customs and you will be fine.
Oh yeah, I am serious about the water. Don't even let a few drops touch your lips while bathing or wash your tooth brush in it. Check with the concergie at your hotel to see if the hotel has it's own chlorine water purification system, if they don't, then drink only weak alcoholic beverages so the alcohol purifys the water.
Acapulco has about 35,000 Canadian Expatriates living there, so it is fairly well North Americanized. Like any city, it is dangerous to go into the wrong neighborhood, fail to use common sense and be obnoxious.

Yes.. It all depends if the tourist uses their common sense. Just like NY is it safe to go and visit. Cancun is a beautiful place I have been there -- you definetly have to use common sense. Taxi drivers will rip you off -- if you don't know what you're talking about -- just like anywhere in the world. Common sense is the key.

Safe yes, long as you stay in the resort and don't wander off. If you leave that area you could find trouble...Be safe.
