Generally not. It is just rubbed over the skin surface with a conducting gel. However occasionally specially detailed scans are needed- trans vaginal, in this case the probe is inserted into the vagina. This is not however at all painful, so be reassured.

Having worked in radiology I can tell you there are several types of pelvic scans.
If you are having an ultrasound, we will generally scan your lower belly first from the outside. Just like for a pregnancy- gooey stuff and the wand projects an image on the screen. Then we insert another wand type which is a vaginal probe- it's not bad at all. And that gives a clearer internal picture from the inside. It is fairly small- about the size of a quarter around and 6" long. Most men are bigger than that.
If you are having a CT, this is all externally. you'll lie on a table and the table with move through a O ring shaped machine which take x-rays in little slices of your entire pelvic. It basically takes all the x-rays, and combines them into a image of your abdomino pelvic area. Sometimes they will inject a dye through an IV, have it mixed in a drink or both to help distinguish blood vessels from intestine. There is also MRI which is more of a tube like machine, and nucular medicine with is usually a table with camera arms that move around you. Of all of these ultrasound is the less comfortable because it is more invasive but usually not painful at all. Just a little embarassing to have a stranger do this. But rest assured they do it all the time and could care less anymore. Yours is nothing new sweety, don't worry. So, relax and let them do their job, and it'll be over before you know it.
If you are going in for a cat scan (CT or computerized tomography) you'll need to let everyone know if you are allergic to anything, especially shelfish or iodine. For all of these except ultrasound you need to know that you are not pregnant. If unsure, get a home test and rule it out. No X-rays that I'm aware of have been found to be safe or unsafe for use in pregnancy. Better to be safe that be sorry for birth defects. Hope this helps you!

I think they're referring to an ultrasound, which can be done from the outside, as you've probably seen done on pregnant women, they put gel on your stomach and hold the scanner to that (you have to have a full bladder for this so they'll make you drink quite a lot of water first - which is uncomfortable, especially when they press the scanner down!) A better view is taken when they insert a specially shaped scanner. It doesn't hurt at all.

Sorry bmac - in my experience (years of IUI/IVF) a pelvic scan is carried out by inserting a probe into you and getting a good view on a scan screen of your pelvic organs.
It is pain free, over in a few mins and nothing to worry about.

it depends. if you're having an ultrasound it's done from the outside with a "scanner" thing, like when you have a baby.

if you're having a hysteroscopy, it's done with a camera put inside you. it's not painful, I promise. I had it done last friday.

there are all sorts of gynaecological scan and exams you can have done. what are you having it done for? you need to find out what procedure you're having done and then come back here and find out some more information on it.

good luck xxxxxx

No. No, no, no, Caroline. I guess she's never had one.

No scanner. The doctor inserts a speculum to open you up, then they feel around inside you. It's not painful, just uncomfortable. But it only lasts a minute or two. While they have you open, they will take a swab--the pap smear.

Then you're done.

Sometimes this is like a pregnancy scan (from the outside) or it can be done from the inside too... Be prepared!

no it would not damage. your hymen in all likelihood already has damaged for the reason that ridding motorcycles and doing the splits and stuff like that help destroy it. so certain you not in any respect had sex yet, your hymen is ruptured so do not difficulty about it hurting. it wont. merely relax and shop all of your muscle tissue on your body comfortable. the extra you relax the easier it truly is. I actually have has a trans vaginal ultrasound in the previous and it truly is a chunk of cake. they merely stick this little stick (probe) interior of you and it takes pictures of your uterus and ovaries and stuff like that. its no huge deal. my grandma has an identical problem as you with the no classes element and her hymen change into too thick so each and every of the era blood subsidized up interior of her and thats why she did not get her era. perchance thats what your having? good success. do not difficulty. it wont damage in any respect. merely relax.
