At the hairdressers I usally tip the girl that washes my hair £1 (hair cut is usually around £30). A taxi driver I would probably tip - on a ride for about £4-£9 I would probably tip £1 or round up the figure to the nearest pound etc. For a meal I would ONLY tip if the service was good - if service was bad they can forget the tip and I probably wouldn't go back!

When I order a take away, if it arrives before or at the time they had said at the time of placing the order then I do tip, but if it arrives later then I don't. When getting my hair cut if they do a good job then yes, if they don't or they aren't very friendly etc then I don't. When I get a taxi if the driver is friendly and makes conversation or gets to the destination fast then yes, but if their not friendly or they take the long route then no. All of which I think is only fair. Don't feel awkward they get paid to do their job to provide a service and anything on top of that is a bonus and if you can't afford it then you can't afford it.

i only tip if the service was outstanding or when the person has been having a rough night!! i work in the licensed trade and have done for a while and understand what its like! we went to a restaurant and one girl was working the whole floor on her own while the manager was sitting down doing nothing!! i felt so sorry for her! she kept a smile on her face though and was polite throughout! so to cher them i they get a tip from me!! Taxi drivers i tip if they are nice and polite and actually speak to me! if i have a laugh with them they get a tip! hairdressers, they get a tip when im really happy with my look!!
But in the uk we dont really need to tip the staff are on a minimum wage anyway. its part of their job to give good service so dont feel bad if you cant afford it! when i was in the usa i was shocked that they get a basic wage of less than half our minimum wage and rely entirely on the tips they make, we tipped everywhere we went although it did take me a while to figure it out! im no good with percentages! but there was this one place in new york where the waitress was terrible, the restaurant was not busy we were in her section but she was more concearned with eating her tea while serving us, we had to ask for cutlery as the first lot had been taken away with our plates!! i was disgusted! she got left a cent! she then chased after us and yelled thankyou very much down the stairs to which i replied your welcome! if she had made an effort i would have gladly tipped!!!

When I was poor I used to feel I had to tip the world. Not so. Let the Yanks do that for it is there culture. Only tip for the very best service or leave the change with them if you don't want to carry the odd coppers around. Don't be intimidated by anyone. Do not feel awkward. The other day I was proferred a credit card machine with the words 'Tip?' and the guy was pointing at it. I told him Detroit City in the 2.40pm and blow me down he won. So he did well out of me

I always tip in restaurants. Even if I don't have much money on me, if I can't afford a tip I won't go out to eat. The reason is because food service workers do not normally make minimum wage. If I have a server with a bad attitude I still tip because I can understand how that job could make you a bit cranky, and a little extra money can brighten up yr day.

We get a take away delivered sometimes and my mum and I will tip the person who delivers (they got £5 at Christmas!) but my brother never does. I hate the way that some people expect to be tipped just because they're a waiter/waitress or something like that. If they don't think they get paid enough for the job they do they should speak to the management, not beg from the customers!

When you tip someone, it means you really think they did a good job at what they did for you. Tips are usually nice to the people who get them, but you alone get to choose whether the person deserves very little, a bit more, or nothing at all. I think it is really rude to leave a tiny tip, though-- just a coin or something. It's an insult to the person, and, like it's better to keep silent rather than insult someone, it's better not to tip at all than to tip so little. But when the service is exceptional, and the effort is real, it is nice to compliment the service.
Think of it this way. The waiter is being paid to take your order, bring your food, and take away your dishes, but he is not being paid for being so friendly and smiley and ready to help and give advice. The tip you give is just a way of saying thank-you to him for going the extra mile with you.

i alwasy tip. that is how they make their money. hairdressers, waitresses and other ppl who rely on tips get almost nothing an hour. like way les than minumum wage! when deciding if you can afford soemhting or not, you should factor in the tip as well. when i get my hair done, i tip 20% as long as she did a good job. if a waitress gives good service i give 20%. even if it wasnt so good i still give10-15% bc sometimes they are overloaded and its not their fault if someone called in so they have extra tables or something. anyone who has ever worked in a service job undertsands that ppl can be sooo rude and have unrealistic expectations, so i always tip well.

Yes, here in S.India, to some of the suppliers in the hotel. As for hair dressers and Taxiwallas, the agreed rate is paid. sometimes, Taxi drivers are tipped, to cover their food charges, when we are on long trip.

Depends. If I get good service in a restaurant then yes I will tip if the tip is not included in the bill.Only because waiting staffs wages are so low though. The way I see it I do my job and get a wage I don't get tips so I don't feel obligated in any other situation to tip as people are just doing their job.
