Don't use an undergravel with goldies, they are way too messy for that type of filter. I would get a good canister filter and at least 1 good power filter. Try and aim for at least 10x turn over rate total for a tank used for goldfish, so no less then 750 gph, more is better though.

No undergravel filter. They slowly clog with detrious matter and will eventually bring the health of the tank down in highly wasteful species like goldfish. 1 or 2 Bio-Wheels will do you better than a whole tank UGF, and its low maintenance.
I reccommend a combination of 2 filters. I often find that 1 filter isn't enough for tanks 55 gallons & up with wasteful fish. I like combining Magnum 350 with Emperor 400.

NO undergravel filters whatsoever. They suck the waste under the grates and can cause massive problems with the water quality. Get a canister filter. Do not get a protein skimmer, that would be a waste of at least a hundred dollars on a freshwater goldfish tank. Not many freshwater people bother with expensive skimmers anyway. A canister filter will be better biological filtration than a skimmer.

I would suggest a canister filets such as a Fluval or Rena. They work twice as hard and also use carbon, zeolite and other chemicals to help filter out ammonia. You may also want to make sure the size filter you get is 10-15 gallons extra than waht you need.
You could get an undergravel filter in addition to a canister filter, but I would not try it alone. Just make sure you are doing 10% water changes weekly and siphoning the gravel. Goldfish are really dirty.

yes you should use an under gravel filter, reason being, this is your bacterial bed,Without it your fish will not do as well,it will also cut down on water changes.I also highly suggest in getting a Skilter 400,this is a protein skimmer and a biological filter combo. When keeping gold fish the primary goal is clean water.I work in a pet store and I also keep fish of my own.I've been keeping fish for many years.Gold fish put out many times more ammonia than any other fish, they also seem to be on the oily side. The suspended proteins from your fishes waste and un-eaten food can be a major problem in a tank .A protein skimmer will remove all of this. One last thing get a book ,best advise for fish keepers.Enjoy your fish and good luck to you.

Goldfish are big poopers. I have two Bio Wheel filters in my 75 gallon (not goldfish), and they work great.
