Character building is the process of teaching morals and values that a group feels are important to its followers/students/children so they may be a positive influence to those around them.

Sustaining character building is something difficult to explain in a Yahoo! Answers forum. There is no one way of doing but the ways that I've seen revolve around at least two separate learning groups: children and adults. In each group there is some sort of discussion leader that will pose a topic when they meet to teach a lesson. The groups would meet in some consistent schedule and occasionally have events with each other to show what they've learned recently. Many take trips or "retreats" where the isolation allows for deeper thought. Most also perform community service, as charity is usually a key element in building character.

Character building means learning to choose right, to do right even when it is hard. To choose right you have to have an idea of what is good and what is bad. Self discipline helps one to be consistent in doing right.
Church helps because the preaching and teaching should educate and encourage the people's understanding of what is good to do.
Being with other people who have the same goal of knowing and living what is right, gives one support.
Talking to others about one's choices, successes and failures in choosing right, helps hold one accountable to continue one's efforts.
